Things Your Plastic Surgeon Will Tell You to Do to Prepare for Your Surgery

by | Jan 24, 2020 | Health

Before undergoing plastic surgery, you will need to prepare so that you will sail through your procedure without any issues. Your plastic surgeon in the Chicago Loop will base his or her preparation suggestions on whether or not you are having general anesthesia, your pre-existing medication conditions, and the medications you are currently taking. Here are some things your surgeon may tell you to do before having your procedure.

Eat Healthy Foods

Before your surgery, your plastic surgeon in the Chicago Loop will suggest that you consume a healthy diet. Eating foods high in vitamin C, vitamin D, B vitamins, magnesium, and potassium, will help ensure a strong immune system so that you heal well.

Eating nutrient-dense foods will also help prevent a post-operative infection. Also, including lean sources of protein such as chicken breast, legumes, and low-fat dairy products will help maintain optimal collagen function and promote wound healing after your surgery.

Check Your Medications

Your plastic surgeon may tell you to talk to your family physician about the medications you take. For example, if you take anticoagulants or aspirin regularly, you may need to discontinue using them for a week or more prior to your surgery date.

These medications can cause excess bleeding during and after your plastic surgery, so you’ll need to talk to the prescribing physician about whether or not you can stop taking them. Dietary supplements should also be discontinued prior to your surgery because they can also cause abnormal bleeding and interfere with your general anesthesia.
